The Pipeline Safety Trust promotes fuel transportation safety through education and advocacy, by increasing access to information, and by building partnerships with residents, safety advocates, government, and industry, that result in safer communities and a healthier environment.
Our State Transparency Survey
In July of 2011 the staff at the Pipeline Safety Trust reviewed the websites of all 50 states to see if basic pipeline safety information that people from across the country call us about was readily available. We were disappointed to find that most states provide very little information that would allow citizens, local government, or state legislators the ability to form an opinion about how safe pipelines are in their states. Below are links to the survey findings as well as other information related to such transparency
"Only when state pipeline-safety agencies provide clear evidence that they are on top of these safety issues will trust in pipeline safety be rebuilt"
After we released our transparency survey a number of states took our message seriously and moved forward rapidly to provide more information. So far we have learned that Arkansas, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Washington have upgraded their websites to make information easier for the public to find. In fact, both Washington and Arkansas are now ahead of PHMSA on the list.
We will do this survey again for all states each July and post the results. If states contact us with upgrade information during the year we will upgrade the chart for that state based on the new information as it arrives.
We appreciate the efforts these states have already taken to make more information easily available.
